Checking in: Coral Gables is Old Miami
Discovering the Old City within the new Miami during a weekend at Loews Coral Gables
Some hotels simply give you a place to sleep. Others give you a reason to stay awhile. Loews Coral Gables is decidedly the latter, and when a few friends and I traded our North Florida routines for a long weekend in Miami’s most storied neighborhood, we had no idea how quickly we’d settle into the slower rhythm of the Gables.
Coral Gables has always carried itself with a certain quiet confidence. Mediterranean Revival architecture, banyan-lined streets and an old-world elegance that feels worlds away from the velvet-rope energy of South Beach. The Loews fits seamlessly into the neighborhood, polished but approachable with just enough European sensibility to make you feel farther from home than you actually are.
Dinner First

After checking in, we headed straight to Americana Kitchen, the hotel’s signature restaurant, because every girls’ weekend deserves an equally good dinner reservation. We settled into a corner table not quite knowing what to expect, and then the Golden Goat caviar service arrived.
The presentation was pure theater. Savory squid cones layered with crème fraîche, chives and Golden Goat Kaluga caviar arrived beautifully arranged and just indulgent enough to feel celebratory without tipping into gimmick territory. The table went quiet in the way it only does when everyone commits fully to the moment.
Dinner only gained momentum from there. Grilled octopus arrived tender and smoky alongside crispy potatoes, piquillo peppers and aioli, followed by a wood-fired margherita pizza and Brussels sprouts that disappeared faster than anything else on the table. We capped things off with the restaurant’s signature lemon cake and espresso martinis, settling into the kind of conversation that makes you forget to check the time.
Saturday at the Rooftop Pool

The next afternoon, we claimed a rooftop cabana overlooking Coral Gables and settled into what quickly became the unofficial agenda for the day: absolutely nothing.
Framed by tropical landscaping and skyline views, the rooftop pool felt more tucked-away retreat than major-city hotel. Guests drifted between loungers, cocktails arrived without much effort on our part and the entire afternoon unfolded at an unhurried pace. The kind of place where you swear you’ll just stay for an hour, only to look up and realize the sun has started to shift.
Wandering the Neighborhood

One of the best parts of staying at Loews Coral Gables is that the neighborhood practically begs to be explored on foot.
One morning, we wandered shaded sidewalks and coral rock streets, beginning with lattes at Café Demetrio before ducking into Books & Books, where coffee table books somehow made their way into our shopping bags despite our best efforts at restraint. Lunch at Hillstone followed, because some restaurants simply never miss.
Between the bougainvillea-covered facades, Mediterranean architecture and quieter pace, Coral Gables feels like a softer, more elegant version of Miami. Less scene, more substance.
And the neighborhood’s dining landscape only continues to evolve. Since our visit, Palm Beach favorites Buccan, Buccan Sandwich Shop and Grato have opened Coral Gables outposts, giving weekend wanderers even more reason to linger close to the hotel.
Rooms, Spa & the Rest

Two nights felt both too short and strangely satisfying, the mark of a place that leaves you wanting more instead of counting the hours until checkout. The spa offered a welcome reset between outings, and the service throughout struck that elusive balance between attentive and effortless. Warm without hovering, polished without feeling rehearsed.
Final Thoughts
Loews Coral Gables is the kind of hotel that quietly exceeds expectations. Not flashy, not overly trendy, just thoughtfully done in a way that makes settling in feel easy.
For Floridians craving a quick escape that feels genuinely transportive, it delivers. A rooftop cabana, neighborhood strolls, lingering dinners and the feeling, if only for a weekend, that you’ve somehow slipped into another version of Florida entirely.
