Scallop Season

Coastline from Gulf County to Pasco County
June 15–September 24

Snorkelers dive for fan-shaped mollusks nestled in lush seagrass beds in June, signaling the official start of scallop season. The longstanding Big Bend tradition––recreational-only since 1994––continues to lure sea-loving families to forage for dinner. Bounty-hunters without boats can still join the summer fun by wading through shallow waters or booking a local charter. To prevent waste, experts recommend leaving behind any scallops smaller than the bottom of a soda can to ensure their ribbed shells grow to maturity.
